University of Washington Magnuson Health Sciences Center (MHSC) Roof Replacement & Fall Protection Design

Scope

MHSC is a complex of buildings connected in various configurations and is located adjacent and connected to the University of Washington Hospital. MHSC is, in part, a 24/7 operating facility that supports patient care, training/classroom, administrative/office and research and development.

This $4.4 million, 80,000 sf roof replacement project (17 roof levels), was contracted through a GCCM process. Challenges include: Extensive mechanical units of varying ages and purposes; environmental containment planning and design for odors, dust, vibrations, stormwater, hazardous materials, PCB’s; very limited access (physical and time windows); aesthetic sensitivity to minimize destruction of existing masonry.
