Green River Community College Cedar Hall Renovation

Scope

Predesign, architectural & interior design for a $10.2 million, 62,000 sf facility renovation. The building was completely transformed from its 1970’s era roots to a modernized and contemporary functionality that will serve the campus for another fifty years.

Floor plans were reorganized to meet present-day programmatic needs and accessibility. The renovated facility features a redefined, double-story entryway with new spaces for student study, reception and open stair. Energy efficient windows were installed and two large sky-lights added to bring natural light into the interior of this building, located in a densely forested part of the GRCC Campus. A fourth floor was added to house mechanical systems enabling ease of access for maintenance.

Most impressively a large extent of the cherished exterior cedar tree canopy and native vegetation was preserved through careful planning and construction specification.
Universal access was significantly improved with features including stair handrails with embedded LED lighting making navigation safer and easier; exterior, well lit graded pathway that circumnavigates the facility; and ADA toilet facilities.

Cedar Hall now integrates seamlessly into the Science Technology Commons – providing connectivity and pedestrian access between adjacent Science and Technology campus buildings forming a triumvirate science-tech hub.

The facility was designed to LEED® Silver.
