OWNER: Highline College
PROJECT TYPE: Infrastructure
SCOPE: Following the February 28, 2001 Nisqually earthquake, the firm was engaged to assess damage to the campus underground utility tunnel system. The post-earthquake evaluation revealed a hazardous situation below ground, resulting in the tunnels’ condemnation and immediate repair work. A new tunnel was constructed to run above and parallel to the old, deteriorated tunnel, and damaged utilities were repaired or replaced. Due to the depth of excavation, the proximity of the new tunnel to the old one, and the constraints of the existing utilities, the new tunnel was constructed with deep shoring piles and concrete to ensure a sound structural foundation.
The emergency nature of this project significantly compressed the design and construction schedule with construction starting before design was complete.
The design team worked continually with the College and the Contractor to maintain access and services to all campus buildings throughout construction, ensuring that classes and events continued during an extremely disruptive process.
